Drones have gone mad within the past couple years. Being able to take beautiful photos and videos of the New Zealand landscape, whilst standing in your local park or backyard is something everyone can enjoy.
However drones (and other related drone products, such as FPV goggles) can be very expensive to buy in New Zealand.
For example lets look at the price of a DJI Phantom 4 from a New Zealand retailer;
(As with all my articles I won’t be naming the retailer, after all everyone has a right to set the price they determine of a certain product).
2700 dollars for a drone is rather expensive, but what other options do you have when it comes to purchasing a high value product in a country so isolated such as New Zealand?
The answer is of course Amazon!
Amazon is a giant when it comes to eCommerce, and is the go to website for most Americans to do practically all of their online shopping.
The only issue is, most high value products on Amazon don’t ship to New Zealand. Let’s take a look at the DJI Phantom 4 page on Amazon;
As you can see the the message just below the pricing point of the item states “This item does not ship to Auckland, New Zealand. Please check other sellers who may ship internationally.”.
Most people would see the above comment and be disheaterened, but fear not! I’m going to teach you how to import the product into New Zealand at minimal cost, saving over 500 dollars on the DJI Phantom 4 drone.
The majority of kiwis don’t know about the New Zealand postal shipping service.
The New Zealand post started the Youshop service in 2015. Basically Youshop is a service that allows you to have a physical postal address in both the UK and the US. You can then use your personal Youshop address to forward parcels and packages onto your New Zealand home!
In this article I will show you how to go about importing a drone into New Zealand (from Amazon), how to calculate the cost of shipping and GST, and just how much cash you could save by using Youshop and importing a drone into New Zealand!
Lets start with creating a Youshop account;
Step One; Creating a Youshop account
The very first thing we need to do before we go about ordering the drone into New Zealand, is to create a Youshop account and set up our personal address.
We’re going to want to navigate over to the Youshop website (click here)
You will land on the following page;
Then click on the “sign up for free” button (as highlighted above)
Now simply fill out all of the relevant information to create your account (its important to note that you should sign up with an email that you check often, the reasons for this will explained in a moment).
Once you have finished the sign up process, you will get an activation email that looks like this;
In the above activation email you can see you will instantly get three personal addresses, that you can forward parcels from. The locations of these addresses are in; Europe, China, The United Kingdon and The United States
We will be ordering the Phantom 4 from Amazon.com (as explained in the beginning of the post) and we will be using our Youshop address to forward the Drone onto New Zealand
Step Two; Pricing Estimation
Now we have our free Youshop account, lets now estimate just how much cash we can save by importing the DJI Phantom 4 into New Zealand from Amazon, as apposed to buying from a brick and mortor New Zealand store.
There are two very important things to note when estimating the price of importing a product into New Zealand using Youshop;
The price Youshop will charge you to forward ship the DJI Phantom 4 from The USA to New Zealand.
Along with the import taxes and GST on the item
It’s always important to get the estimation of both of these prices before you go ahead and actually order the product (that way you don’t have a heart attach when Customs charges you a arm and a leg for GST!).
Always estimate both of the above prices before you actually order the DJI Phantom 4 into New Zealand (that way you don’t fall off a chair when customs charges you a fortune for GST and import taxes!
So let’s go to the calculator that Youshop provides to estimate the shipping cost of the item (click here).
We now need to grab the dimensions of the DJI Phantom 4 found on the Amazon product page (its about halfway down the page under the “technical details” section)
Now we know the dimensions of the DJI Phantom 4, we will then put them into the calculator to get the international postage rate of the Phantom 4);
As you can see in the above screenshot, there are different pricing levels depending on how fast you want to recieve the DJI Phantom 4
For me personally, I wouldn’t mind waiting a few extra days (choosing the 9-14 day delivery) as I could save an extra 25 dollars!
Now we have estimated the price of shipping the DJI Phantom 4 to New Zealand, we need to calculate the GST and import taxes on the item.
Let’s now go to the “whats my duty” website and find the GST calculator;
Go ahead and click “Calculate Duty” (as shown in the highlighted red box above)
You’ll then come to the actual calculator for GST and import taxes that the New Zealand government provides residents of New Zealand.
Now we need to fill out all of the information about the DJI Phantom 4. To save you some time I’ve done this for you already. Here’s what the numbers look like!;
Now we have the total of how much its going to cost us to import the DJI Phantom 4 into New Zealand, as apposed to buying it from a brick and mortor store;
Total cost in New Zealand dollars; $2699 dollars
Youshop international shipping rate; $74.50 (for the slower shipping rate)
GST and Import tax rate; $246.21 Total cost in New Zealand dollars; $1959.71 dollars
As you can see from the above comparison, buying the DJI Phantom 4 from Amazon (as apposed to New Zealand) saves us a massive 740 dollars! That’s also AFTER we ALL import taxes GST AND shipping charges.
It is however important to note that when you go to buy the DJI Phantom 4 the price may be slightly different (Amazon prices flucuate at different points of the year) but regardless a 700 dollar saving on the Phantom 4 is huge!
Now that we not the total cost of ordering the entire item, let’s go ahead and buy that drone!
Step Three; Ordering the DJI Phantom 4!
Now all we need to do is go to the DJI Phantom 4 Amazon page (I have linked it at various points throughout the article) and enter our Youshop shipping information to order the product!
NOTE; It’s very VERY important that when you enter your name into the “Full Name” section on Amazon, YOU ENTER THE ONE YOUSHOP GAVE YOU. The reason for this is that your unique Youshop name and ID number allows the Youshop warehouse in the US to be able to hold the package for you knowing it is to be delivered onto your New Zealand address;
Once you get the above email, you simply need to login to your Youshop account (click here), and pay the GST and import tax invoices. BUT the best thing about this whole process, is we already know exactly what the price will be so there is literally no stress!
Step Four; Get the DJI Phantom 4
As one of the above screenshots shows, the shipping time on the Phantom 4 is between 9 and 14 days, so in a few weeks you will have your brand new Drone (I’ve had a few people send me videos they got with their Phantom after reading my article. If you order the Phantom and shoot some awesome video of the New Zealand landscape send it to me! I’d love to see it!)
I hope this article has opened your eyes on how just how fantastic the Youshop service is that is offered by the NZ Post. It allows you to buy expensive, high ticket items, for a siginifantly cheaper cost then it would be to order them from an NZ retailer.
Over the coming months I’m going to be doing tons of more interesting content around importing products into beautiful New Zealand, so make sure you subscribe to our email list to see that content first!
I’ve included this button several times throughout the article, but if you still can’t make up your mind (I don’t blame you!) click the above link and you’ll be taken directly to the DJI Phantom 4 Facebook page!
Thanks so much and until next time
PS – Found some fantastic NZ drone footage, so you can see just how high quality the Phantom 4 is!
